Publishing Support for Fiction Writers

A selective publishing path for fiction projects that are ready, aligned, and appropriate for The Sculpted Word imprint.

Hybrid publishing through The Sculpted Word is collaborative and selective. Before moving forward, the author and publisher agree on the project’s scope, responsibilities, production costs, formats, rights, royalties, timeline, and distribution.

Writers are welcome to inquire, but hybrid publishing is not open enrollment. Every project is reviewed for readiness, genre fit, content fit, imprint alignment, and available publishing capacity before any agreement is offered.

What Hybrid Publishing Means Here

Hybrid publishing through The Sculpted Word is a collaborative publishing path for select fiction projects. It is not traditional publishing, self-publishing coaching, or a package that guarantees publication.

Before publishing terms are discussed, the manuscript must be reviewed and accepted for publication by The Sculpted Word. If the project is accepted, the author and publisher must agree in writing on the project’s scope, responsibilities, production costs, formats, rights, royalties, timeline, and distribution approach. No publishing work begins until those terms are clear and accepted by both the author and The Sculpted Word.

Scope and Responsibilities

Each project is reviewed individually. The publishing scope may include print, ebook, audiobook, web-reading placement, or a combination of formats, depending on the project and what The Sculpted Word can responsibly support.

Costs and Production

Production responsibilities and costs are discussed before work begins. This may include setup, formatting, cover preparation, ISBN use, distribution setup, audiobook coordination, or other project-specific needs.

Rights, Royalties, and Distribution

The author retains copyright. The publishing agreement defines the rights granted for the project, royalty structure, reporting schedule, and payment terms.

Publishing Begins with Readiness

A publishing inquiry is the first step, not a promise of publication. Before The Sculpted Word considers a project for hybrid publishing, the manuscript must be reviewed for readiness, genre fit, content fit, imprint alignment, and publishing scope.

Every inquiry begins with a Publishing Project Review. If the project appears to be a possible fit, a paid Publishing-Readiness Assessment is required before any publishing agreement is offered.

Review Before Agreement

What the assessment determines

The Publishing-Readiness Assessment helps determine whether the manuscript appears ready for publication, whether proofreading may be sufficient, or whether deeper editorial work should come first.

What the assessment is not

This assessment is not a full edit, revision plan, or developmental report.

Editorial services are separate

Developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and revision coaching are handled separately through Editorial Services.

Assessment fee

For projects accepted into hybrid publishing, the Publishing-Readiness Assessment fee may be credited toward agreed-upon publishing costs, depending on the final scope of the project.

Publishing support through The Sculpted Word varies by project. The services included depend on the manuscript, format goals, production needs, available publishing capacity, and the agreed publishing scope.

The written publishing agreement documents the approved services, responsibilities, costs, formats, rights, royalties, timeline, and related terms before publishing work begins.

Not every project will include every form of support listed below.

What Publishing Support May Include

Imprint Publishing

For select projects, The Sculpted Word may publish the work under its imprint according to the terms of a written publishing agreement.

Print and Ebook Setup

Publishing support may include print setup through IngramSpark, ebook setup, or both, depending on the approved formats for the project.

Audiobook Coordination

When appropriate, The Sculpted Word may assist with audiobook coordination and distribution setup, including narrator-related planning when applicable.

Web Reading Placement

Select projects may be considered for web novel or hosted web-reading placement through The Sculpted Word.

ISBN and Metadata Support

Publishing support may include ISBN assignment when appropriate, along with metadata support such as book description, category, and keyword guidance.

Cover and Interior Preparation

The Sculpted Word may coordinate cover and interior preparation for approved formats, depending on the project’s needs and production plan

Distribution Setup

Distribution setup may be handled through manageable platforms appropriate for the project and agreed publishing scope.

Basic Launch Support

Basic launch support may include sales page language, site placement, social copy, reader-facing copy, and limited promotional support. Light, brief paid advertising may be considered for select projects depending on available resources, but paid advertising, major publicity, media outreach, reviews, awards, sales, or bookstore placement are not guaranteed.

Royalty Reporting and Payment

Royalty reporting and payment are handled according to the written publishing agreement.

What Hybrid Publishing Does Not Include

Hybrid publishing through The Sculpted Word is selective and project-specific. It should not be confused with automatic publication, editorial services, or guaranteed marketing outcomes.

The services included in a publishing project depend on the manuscript, approved formats, production needs, available publishing capacity, and agreed publishing scope.

Editorial services

Hybrid publishing does not include developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, revision coaching, or a full Editorial Manuscript Assessment. Those services are handled separately through Editorial Services.

Guaranteed outcomes

Hybrid publishing does not guarantee sales, reader reviews, awards, bookstore placement, media attention, major publicity, or long-term marketing support.

Assumptions not to make

Light, brief paid advertising may be considered for select projects depending on available resources, but paid advertising is not guaranteed and should not be assumed as part of the publishing path.

A publishing inquiry, project review, or Publishing-Readiness Assessment does not guarantee that The Sculpted Word will offer a publishing agreement.

Content and Project Fit

The Sculpted Word reviews projects for more than manuscript quality. A project must also fit the imprint, audience, content boundaries, publishing scope, and available publishing capacity.

A strong manuscript may still be declined if it is not the right fit for The Sculpted Word’s publishing path.

What Projects Are Reviewed For

Projects are reviewed for fiction focus, genre fit, content fit, manuscript readiness, imprint alignment, publishing scope, and whether The Sculpted Word can responsibly support the project.

Not a Fit

The Sculpted Word does not consider the following for hybrid publishing:

  • Nonfiction

  • Poetry

  • Children’s stories for web-novel publication

  • Hate propaganda or work that promotes hatred, dehumanization, discrimination, or violence toward a protected or vulnerable group.

  • Pornographic/XXX content

  • Stories promoting underage sexual content or incest

  • Horror-driven work where the main purpose is to disturb, terrify, traumatize, or dwell in graphic horror, body horror, erotic horror, or slasher-style content

Important Clarifications

Romance with mature sexual content

The Sculpted Word may consider romance that includes mature, steamy, or explicit sexual content when the romance, character development, and story arc can stand on their own apart from the sexual scenes.

If sexual content is the central point of the work rather than part of a larger romantic or fictional arc, the project is not a fit.

Supernatural, paranormal, and horror boundaries

Classic supernatural or paranormal fiction may be acceptable, including vampires, werewolves, urban fantasy, gothic atmosphere, monster fiction, suspense, fantasy violence, and paranormal romance.

Extreme horror, gore-centered horror, demonic possession horror, torture-heavy stories, slasher-style stories, or stories designed mainly to shock, disturb, or traumatize are not a fit.

The Sculpted Word is not opposed to responsible creative tools, but authorship matters. Hybrid publishing is considered only for stories written by the author, not stories generated by AI.

Authors are required to disclose any AI tools used in manuscript development, editing support, cover creation, illustrations, marketing copy, or other creative materials before a publishing decision is made.

AI Use and Creative Ownership

Author-Written Work Only

Stories written by AI

The Sculpted Word does not accept stories written by AI for hybrid publishing.

AI-assisted support

AI-assisted brainstorming, editing support, proofreading support, organization, or refinement may be acceptable when the author remains the writer of the story.

Disclosure required

If AI tools were used in the development of the manuscript, cover, illustrations, marketing copy, or other creative materials, that use must be disclosed.

Creative ownership

The author must be able to affirm that they are the writer of the story. If authorship or creative ownership cannot be reasonably confirmed, The Sculpted Word may decline the project.

AI-generated cover art

AI-generated cover art may be considered when hiring an artist is not feasible, but AI involvement must be acknowledged where required by platforms, distributors, or agreements.

How the Process Works

Step 1
Submit a Publishing Project Review Inquiry

The author begins by submitting basic information about the manuscript, genre, word count, format goals, publishing expectations, and any prior editing or production work.

Step 2
Initial Fit and Scope Review

The Sculpted Word reviews the inquiry for genre fit, content fit, project type, general readiness, imprint alignment, and available publishing capacity.

Step 3
Complete the Publishing-Readiness Assessment

If the project appears to be a possible fit, a paid Publishing-Readiness Assessment is required. This review helps determine whether the manuscript appears ready for publication, whether proofreading may be sufficient, or whether deeper editorial work should come first.

Step 4
Address Editorial Needs, If Needed

If the manuscript is not ready for publication, the author may be referred to Editorial Services before publishing is considered further. Authors are not required to use The Sculpted Word’s Editorial Services as a condition of future publishing consideration. They may revise independently, work with another qualified editor, or choose to use The Sculpted Word’s Editorial Services before returning for review.

If deeper editorial work is recommended, part of the Publishing-Readiness Assessment fee may be applied toward the next approved Editorial Services step with The Sculpted Word when booked within 30 days.

Step 5
Discuss the Publishing Scope

If the manuscript is accepted for publication, the author and The Sculpted Word discuss the approved formats, responsibilities, production needs, costs, timeline, rights, royalties, and distribution approach.

Distribution setup is handled through manageable platforms appropriate for the project. Current options may include IngramSpark for print and ebook and Authors Republic for audiobook, with other options considered when beneficial.

Step 6
Sign a Written Publishing Agreement

No publishing work begins until both the author and The Sculpted Word have agreed to the publishing terms in writing.

Step 7
Begin Production and Setup

Once the agreement is signed, the project moves into the agreed production process. This may include print setup, ebook setup, audiobook coordination, web-reading placement, metadata support, cover and interior preparation, distribution setup, and launch-related copy, depending on the approved scope.

This process is designed to protect the author, the manuscript, and The Sculpted Word imprint by making expectations clear before publishing work begins.

Initial contact for publishing questions should be made through the Publishing Project Review Inquiry form. If you are unsure whether your project belongs on this publishing path, use the form to share the basic details and questions you would like The Sculpted Word to consider.

A general question is not the same as a project review, manuscript assessment, or publishing decision. The form helps determine whether the next step should be a publishing inquiry, Editorial Services, or waiting until the manuscript is further along.

  • Yes, depending on the project. The Sculpted Word may consider romance that includes mature, steamy, or explicit sexual content when the romance, character development, and story arc can stand on their own apart from the sexual scenes.
